GET TO KNOW ME
Cultural reconnection through history, spiritual awakening through ancestral wisdom
As a biracial Malawian-Japanese individual, my journey toward Black consciousness began in the space between cultures. Growing up as a diasporan child in Japan, I was intimately familiar with the ache of disconnection—from my ancestral history, spirituality, and collective power.
That sense of seeking only intensified when I entered the workforce as a bilingual professional. The routine of a 9-to-5 job left little room for the deep self-reflection and development I craved. Determined to continue my education on global issues and find a way to contribute, I turned to watching video essays on YouTube.
This practice became my gateway. Beginning with feminist theory, my research soon expanded into the interconnected realms of misogynoir, the global Black experience, and African spirituality. Through this process, I came to a powerful realization: our liberation is rooted in reconnecting with what was stolen. My personal curiosity had blossomed into a profound understanding of the systemic fragmentation affecting Black people worldwide.
